Kaikeyi – A warrior queen to an infamous mother

  When I was growing up in India, I was instilled into me a notion of “god” for Rama, Krishna, along with many other characters of Hindu stories. Both good and evil characters had a purpose to serve in the story and they were part of this grand plot that God himself orchestrated. The stories immediately lost relevance for me in my own mind, and I only viewed them as idealistic stories filled with characters that model perfectionism, which was hard to replicate in real life. However, when I started reading “Ramayana” as purely a fictitious story, I started to admire the characters and see the “godliness” in them. One becomes more forgiving for the mistakes the characters make, try to justify their behavior, and understand how one can take that analysis, and learn to live one's own life if one thinks of it as a story instead of "God's way of living". I present to you here one such analysis built on the most infamous character of the story “Ramayana” –  Kaikeyi. “Why did
